7 July 2005 London bombings

7 July 2005

The 7 July 2005 London bombings were a coordinated series of suicide attacks by four British Islamist extremists on the city's public transport system during the morning rush hour. Three bombs were set off on London Underground trains and a fourth on a double-decker bus, killing fifty-two people and injuring hundreds. The attacks took place a day after London had been chosen to host the 2012 Olympic Games. They were the deadliest terrorist attack in Britain since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing and led to changes in counter-terrorism policing and legislation. A public inquest later examined the emergency response, and a memorial to the victims stands in Hyde Park.
