Release of Joomla

17 August 2005

Joomla is a free and open-source content management system for building websites. It was launched in 2005 as a fork of Mambo, after a dispute between Mambo's developers and the company that held its trademark led the development team to leave and form their own project. The name comes from a Swahili word meaning all together. Joomla is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database, and its architecture of components, modules, plugins and templates makes it extensible. It was widely used for the websites of small businesses, organizations and communities, competing with WordPress and Drupal. The project name was announced in the summer of 2005, and its first release followed shortly afterward.
