The United Nations Economic and Social Council was established in 1945 by the UN Charter as one of the six principal organs of the organisation. It has 54 member states elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms, and it holds its sessions in New York and Geneva. Its job is to coordinate the economic, social and related work of the UN and its specialised agencies, such as the World Health Organization and UNESCO. It runs functional commissions on topics including the status of women, population and narcotic drugs, and regional commissions for different parts of the world. The council also grants consultative status to non-governmental organisations, which gives them a way to take part in UN debates.
