The Trusteeship Council is one of the principal organs of the United Nations, set up by the UN Charter in 1945 to supervise the administration of trust territories. These were colonies that had belonged to the defeated powers of the Second World War or to the League of Nations mandate system, and the Council worked to prepare them for self-government or independence. Eleven territories were placed under trusteeship, in Africa and the Pacific, among them Tanganyika, Togoland and Samoa. By the 1990s all had become independent or joined neighboring states. The last, Palau, became independent in 1994, and the Council then suspended its operations.
