Founding of Jodrell Bank Observatory

1945

Jodrell Bank Observatory is a radio astronomy site in Cheshire, England, established by the University of Manchester. Bernard Lovell founded it to study cosmic rays and meteors using army surplus radar equipment, and it grew into one of the world's leading radio astronomy centres. Its best-known instrument, the Lovell Telescope, completed in the 1950s, is a huge steerable dish that tracked the Soviet Sputnik carrier rocket in 1957 and later tracked deep space probes. The observatory is the headquarters of the e-MERLIN array and of the Square Kilometre Array project, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.
