Launch of Le Monde

18 December 1944

Le Monde is a French daily newspaper founded in Paris shortly after the liberation of the city, at the request of General de Gaulle, by the journalist Hubert Beuve-Méry as a successor to the prewar paper Le Temps. Beuve-Méry directed it until 1969 and built its reputation for independence, seriousness and thorough coverage of international affairs. It appears in the afternoon, dated the following day. For decades its journalists held a blocking minority of its capital, a safeguard of its editorial independence, until it was taken over in 2010 by a group of investors. Its website uses a subscription model, and it remains one of the most influential newspapers in the French-speaking world.
