Founding of UN Tourism

1 November 1975

UN Tourism, formerly the World Tourism Organization, is the United Nations agency responsible for promoting sustainable and accessible tourism. It grew out of an earlier body for national tourist offices and was formally established with its headquarters in Madrid. It collects statistics, issues guidance and brings together member states, regional bodies and private-sector affiliates. It organises World Tourism Day each September. It adopted the name UN Tourism in 2024 and has more than a hundred and fifty member countries.
