Premiere of Saturday Night Live

11 October 1975

Saturday Night Live is an American late-night sketch comedy and variety show broadcast live from New York on NBC. It was created by Lorne Michaels, and the first season began with the comedian George Carlin as host. The original cast, known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, included Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner and Dan Aykroyd. Each episode has a guest host and a musical performer, and the programme includes the news satire segment Weekend Update. It has become a cultural institution and has launched the careers of many comedians and actors, and its political parodies have shaped the public image of American politicians.
