Bohemian Rhapsody

31 October 1975

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by the British rock band Queen, written by the lead singer Freddie Mercury and featured on the album A Night at the Opera. It is about six minutes long and has no chorus, moving instead through a ballad introduction, an operatic middle section and a hard-rock passage before a quiet ending. The band spent weeks layering vocal harmonies in the studio, with producer Roy Thomas Baker, and the record company was doubtful about releasing such a long single. Radio broadcasts by the disc jockey Kenny Everett helped to make it a hit, and it spent several weeks at number one in Britain. The accompanying promotional film is often regarded as an early landmark in music videos. The song returned to the charts in the early 1990s.
