Francisco Franco died on 20 November 1975 in Madrid, aged 82. A Spanish general born in Ferrol, Franco rose quickly in the army, fighting in Morocco. In 1936 he took part in the military uprising against the Second Republic and became leader of the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War, which he won in 1939 with help from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. He ruled Spain as dictator, with the title of Caudillo, until his death, banning political parties and trade unions, suppressing regional languages and cultures and imprisoning or executing many opponents. Spain remained officially neutral in the Second World War, and the economy opened up and grew from the late 1950s. He restored the monarchy under Juan Carlos, which opened the way for the country's transition to democracy.
