Founding of Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

5 September 1882

Tottenham Hotspur was formed by a group of schoolboys from the Hotspur Cricket Club in north London, who decided to take up football in the winter. The club added the name of the Percy family, associated with Harry Hotspur of Shakespeare's Henry IV, to avoid confusion with other local sides. In 1901 it became the only non-league club to win the FA Cup, and in 1961 it was the first English club of the twentieth century to win the league and cup double. Spurs have also won several European trophies, including the UEFA Cup and, in 2025, the Europa League. They now play in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, near their old ground at White Hart Lane.
