Construction of Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

1883

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral. It was built to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812, and the original church, designed by Konstantin Thon, took more than forty years to build and was consecrated in 1883. In 1931 the Soviet government blew it up to make room for a planned Palace of Soviets, which was never built, and later a large open-air swimming pool occupied the site. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s and consecrated in 2000. It was the scene of the Pussy Riot protest in 2012.
