Birth of Max Born

11 December 1882

Max Born was born on 11 December 1882 in Wrocław. A German-born physicist and mathematician, Born was a leading figure in the development of quantum mechanics. He worked with Werner Heisenberg and Pascual Jordan on matrix mechanics and proposed the statistical interpretation of the wave function, in which the square of its amplitude gives the probability of finding a particle. For this he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954. A professor at Gottingen, he was dismissed by the Nazis because of his Jewish background and emigrated to Britain, where he taught at Edinburgh. His granddaughter is the singer Olivia Newton-John.
