Origins of Major League Baseball

1903

Major League Baseball took its modern form when the National League, founded in 1876, and the rival American League, which had begun play in 1901, ended a conflict over players and agreed to recognise each other's contracts. The settlement, known as the National Agreement, created a framework in which the two leagues continued separately but cooperated. That autumn the Boston Americans of the American League met the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League in the first modern World Series, and Boston won. The leagues kept separate administrations for nearly a century, and were brought together under one Major League Baseball organisation in 2000.
