Publication of The Adventures of Pinocchio

1883

The Adventures of Pinocchio is a children's novel by the Italian writer Carlo Collodi, the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini, first published in instalments in a Florence children's newspaper from 1881 and released as a book in 1883. It tells of a wooden puppet carved by the old woodcarver Geppetto, who comes to life and is repeatedly tempted into mischief, with his nose growing when he tells lies. He meets characters such as the Talking Cricket, a Fox and a Cat, the Blue-haired Fairy and a giant shark, before becoming a real boy through his good deeds. The original story was darker than later versions, and the first serial version ended with Pinocchio hanged. The 1940 Disney film brought the character to a worldwide audience.
