Clement Attlee was born on 3 January 1883 in Putney. A British Labour politician, Attlee served as Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951, after having been Winston Churchill's deputy in the wartime coalition. A former barrister and social worker in London's East End, he led Labour to a landslide victory in 1945 and oversaw the creation of the National Health Service, the nationalization of major industries and the expansion of the welfare state. His government also granted independence to India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon, and committed Britain to NATO. Modest and quiet, he is often rated among the most consequential prime ministers of the twentieth century.
