Founding of Bank of Japan

27 June 1882

The Bank of Japan is the central bank of Japan, responsible for issuing banknotes, carrying out monetary policy and keeping the financial system stable. It was founded in the Meiji era, following the finance minister Matsukata Masayoshi's reforms to establish a modern monetary system after the chaos of inflation and several types of currency that followed the Meiji Restoration. It was modelled in part on the National Bank of Belgium. Its headquarters are in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo. In 1998 a new law gave the bank greater independence from the government, and in later decades it became known for very low interest rates and large-scale asset purchases.
