Rotary International is a worldwide service organisation whose members are business and professional people who volunteer to help communities. It was founded in Chicago by the lawyer Paul Harris, together with three friends, at the first meeting in 1905, and it took its name from the early habit of rotating meetings between members' offices. Its motto is Service Above Self, and its local clubs raise money and run projects in health, education, clean water and peace. Since 1985 its PolioPlus programme has been a leading partner in the global campaign to eradicate polio, which has reduced cases by more than ninety-nine percent. The movement spread rapidly and now has clubs in most countries of the world.
