Jules Verne died on 24 March 1905 in Amiens, aged 77. A French novelist born in Nantes, Verne became one of the pioneers of science fiction with his series of adventure novels called the Voyages extraordinaires. Working with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, he combined geography, technology and scientific speculation in books such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas and Around the World in Eighty Days. He imagined submarines, space travel and other inventions long before they were realized. His works have been translated into more languages than those of almost any other author, and they have inspired many films and later writers.
