Founding of FC Barcelona

29 November 1899

FC Barcelona was founded on 29 November 1899 by a group of mostly foreign and Catalan enthusiasts led by the Swiss businessman and sportsman Hans Gamper, who became known as Joan Gamper in Catalonia. The club's colours, blue and garnet, are known as blaugrana, and its motto is Mes que un club, more than a club, reflecting its role as a symbol of Catalan identity, especially during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Unlike many clubs it is owned and run by its members, who elect the president. Barcelona has won La Liga and the European Cup or Champions League many times, with great players such as Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. Its youth academy La Masia has produced many stars, and its rivalry with Real Madrid, known as El Clasico, is one of the biggest in sport.
