Mikhail Sholokhov was born on 11 May 1905 in Kruzhilin. A Soviet novelist, Sholokhov is best known for And Quiet Flows the Don, an epic of the Don Cossacks during the First World War, the Revolution and the Civil War, and for Virgin Soil Upturned, a novel about collectivization. He lived in the Don region and was a loyal member of the Communist Party and recipient of numerous Soviet honors. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965. His authorship of the great novel was disputed in his lifetime by critics, who suggested plagiarism, though most scholars have rejected those claims.
