Chelsea Football Club was founded at a meeting in a pub opposite Stamford Bridge, an athletics ground in west London. The ground's owner, Gus Mears, had planned to rent it to a club, and when Fulham declined he created a new team of his own. The name Chelsea was chosen instead of Kensington or Stamford Bridge, since the stadium lies in the borough of Fulham. The club won its first English league title in 1955, and it rose to prominence after Roman Abramovich bought it in 2003. Chelsea has since won multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, first in 2012.
