Founding of Organization of Turkic States

3 October 2009

The Organization of Turkic States is an international organisation that promotes cooperation among Turkic-speaking countries. It was founded as the Cooperation Council of Turkic-speaking States at a summit in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey as the first members. Uzbekistan joined in 2019, and the organisation took its present name in 2021. Hungary and Turkmenistan have observer status. It works in areas such as trade, transport, culture, education and security, and it has a secretariat in Istanbul. Observers see it as a way for Turkey and its partners in Central Asia and the Caucasus to expand their influence and links.
