Release of League of Legends

27 October 2009

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game developed and published by Riot Games, in which two teams of five players, each controlling a character called a champion, try to destroy the other side's base. It was inspired by the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, and was released as a free-to-play game that makes money from cosmetic items. It became one of the most played games in the world and the center of a large esports scene, with an annual World Championship that fills stadiums and draws tens of millions of viewers online. Riot Games was acquired by the Chinese company Tencent, and the franchise has expanded into other games and the animated series Arcane.
