Construction of Cape Town Stadium

14 December 2009

Cape Town Stadium is a large sports and entertainment venue in the Green Point district, set between Signal Hill and the Atlantic coast, within sight of Table Mountain. It was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first held in Africa, and it hosted several matches including a semi-final. The striking design and its location close to the city centre drew praise, though its construction cost and later upkeep were criticized as a burden on the city. After the tournament it struggled to find a permanent main tenant, but it has hosted football, rugby and major concerts. It is also home to the Cape Town Sevens, a popular leg of the world rugby sevens circuit.
