Creation of Go

10 November 2009

Go is a statically typed, compiled programming language that was created at Google and publicly announced as an open-source project in November 2009. It was designed by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike and Ken Thompson, who wanted a language that was simple to read and fast to compile, with built-in support for concurrent programming. Go has a garbage collector, a small set of keywords and lightweight units of concurrency called goroutines. Version 1.0 was released in 2012, and the language has been widely adopted for servers, networking tools and cloud infrastructure, and underlies projects such as Docker and Kubernetes. It is often referred to as Golang to make it easier to find on the web.
