Construction of Moses Mabhida Stadium

28 November 2009

The Moses Mabhida Stadium is a large football stadium in Durban, on South Africa's east coast, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is named after Moses Mabhida, a leader of the South African Communist Party and the anti-apartheid struggle, who died in exile. Its most unusual feature is a huge arch over the stadium, which supports the roof cables and holds a cable car that carries visitors to a viewing platform. The stadium hosted several matches in the World Cup, including a semi-final between Spain and Germany. Afterwards it was used for football, rugby and events, though its running costs have been a matter of debate.
