2009 German federal election

27 September 2009

The 2009 German federal election chose the members of the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, in a vote held during the global financial crisis. Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, with its Bavarian sister party the CSU, remained the largest group, and with the liberal Free Democratic Party won a majority, which allowed them to form a centre-right coalition in place of the grand coalition with the Social Democrats. The Social Democrats, led by Frank-Walter Steinmeier, suffered their worst result in the history of the Federal Republic, while the FDP, the Left and the Greens all gained support. Merkel began her second term as chancellor, and Guido Westerwelle of the FDP became foreign minister.
