Founding of National Stock Exchange of India

1992

The National Stock Exchange of India is the largest stock exchange in India by turnover, headquartered in Mumbai. It was set up in the early 1990s following recommendations of a government committee, with the aim of introducing modern, screen-based trading and challenging the dominance of the older Bombay Stock Exchange, which relied on open outcry. It began with wholesale debt trading and opened its equity market later in 1994, adding derivatives in 2000. Its electronic system, accessible across the country, increased transparency and widened participation by investors. Its main index is the Nifty 50, and NSE has become one of the largest derivatives exchanges in the world by number of contracts traded.
