Founding of International Campaign to Ban Landmines

1992

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines is a global network of non-governmental organizations that campaigns for a ban on anti-personnel mines. It was launched by six organizations, among them Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, with Jody Williams as its first coordinator. Its pressure led to the Ottawa Treaty, the Mine Ban Treaty, which was adopted in 1997 and entered into force in 1999 and now has more than 160 states parties. The campaign and Williams shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Its Landmine Monitor reports track progress each year. Major powers such as the United States, Russia and China have not joined the treaty.
