Construction of Okapi Wildlife Reserve

1992

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in the Ituri Forest, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1992 to protect the okapi, a rare forest relative of the giraffe that lives only in this country, and covers about a fifth of the Ituri Forest. The reserve also shelters chimpanzees, forest elephants and many birds and plants, and is home to the Mbuti and Efe peoples, forest hunter-gatherers. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, and added to the list of sites in danger in 1997 because of conflicts in the region. Armed groups, poaching and illegal mining continue to threaten it.
