Founding of National Bank of Ukraine

1991

The National Bank of Ukraine is the central bank of Ukraine, headquartered in Kyiv. It was created as Ukraine moved towards independence from the Soviet Union, taking over functions that had been controlled from Moscow. In its early years it presided over a period of severe inflation, partly because the country used a temporary currency, the karbovanets. In 1996 it introduced the hryvnia, which stabilised the monetary system. The bank is responsible for monetary policy, the stability of the financial system and the supervision of banks. It has faced exceptional challenges since 2014 and especially since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, when it worked to keep the banking system and payments operating under martial law.
