Creation of Solaris

1991

Solaris is a Unix operating system developed by Sun Microsystems for its workstations and servers. It grew out of SunOS, which was based on the Berkeley Software Distribution; in the early 1990s Sun rebuilt the system on System V Release 4 and marketed it under the Solaris name. It became known for supporting large multiprocessor servers and for technologies such as the ZFS file system and the DTrace tracing tool. Sun released much of its code as OpenSolaris in 2005, a move that inspired derivatives such as illumos. After Oracle bought Sun in 2010, the open-source development ended, and Solaris continued as a commercial product.
