Founding of Mexico men's national football team

9 August 1927

The Mexican men's national football team is run by the Mexican Football Federation, whose creation in 1927 gave the national side a formal governing body. Mexico played its first international match in the early 1920s and soon became the leading team in the CONCACAF region, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. It has qualified for a long series of FIFA World Cup finals and has twice hosted the tournament, in 1970 and 1986, reaching the quarter-finals both times. It has also won many regional titles, including multiple CONCACAF Gold Cups, and won the 1999 Confederations Cup. A long-running rivalry with the United States is one of the best-known in international football.
