Construction of San Francisco International Airport

7 May 1927

San Francisco International Airport is the main airport of the San Francisco Bay Area, located on the western shore of San Francisco Bay, south of the city. It was opened in 1927 as Mills Field Municipal Airport on land that had been farmland, and the first scheduled flights were soon operating from there. In the decades that followed the airport was repeatedly expanded and reclaimed more land from the bay, and it became a major hub for United Airlines and for flights across the Pacific. A large international terminal opened in 2000. It is known for its extensive collection of public art and its museum, and it is one of the busiest airports in the United States.
