Founding of CBS

18 September 1927

CBS is an American television and radio network, which began as a radio network in 1927 under the name of the United Independent Broadcasters and then the Columbia Broadcasting System. It was taken over in 1928 by William S. Paley, who built it into one of the main American networks, sometimes called the Tiffany Network for the quality of its programming. The network entered television in the 1940s, and its news division, with journalists such as Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, was highly respected. It has changed owners several times, including Westinghouse in 1995, Viacom in 2000 and, after a later merger, Paramount. CBS has broadcast long-running series such as I Love Lucy and 60 Minutes.
