Founding of International Basketball Federation

18 June 1932

The International Basketball Federation, known by the French acronym FIBA, was founded in Geneva in June 1932 by eight national federations to coordinate the rules of the sport and to organize international competition. Basketball had been invented by James Naismith in the United States in 1891 and had spread across the world, and the federation helped bring it into the Olympic Games, where it made its first appearance as a full medal sport in 1936 in Berlin. FIBA sets the international rules, organizes events such as the Basketball World Cup, and regulates the registration of players across its national members. Its headquarters have been in Switzerland, now at Mies near Geneva. The federation has grown to include more than two hundred national federations.
