Construction of Estadio Azteca

29 May 1966

The Estadio Azteca, in the south of Mexico City, is one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. It was designed by the architects Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Rafael Mijares and opened in 1966, with a capacity of over a hundred thousand in its early years. It hosted the finals of two World Cups, in 1970, when Brazil won with Pelé, and in 1986, when Diego Maradona scored his Hand of God goal and the goal of the century against England. It is the home of Club América. It has been chosen as a venue for the 2026 World Cup, which would make it the first stadium to host matches in three World Cups.
