Founding of International Organization of Turkic Culture

12 July 1993

The International Organization of Turkic Culture, known by its Turkish abbreviation TURKSOY, was established to promote cooperation between Turkic-speaking countries and communities in the fields of culture, art and education. It was founded at a meeting of culture ministers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Turkmenistan, a few years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union opened new contacts between these nations. The organization has its headquarters in Ankara, and its membership has since grown to include other states and several autonomous regions. It organizes festivals, exhibitions and conferences, supports the preservation of heritage, and designates a Cultural Capital of the Turkic World each year.
