Origins of Magic: The Gathering

5 August 1993

Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game created by the American mathematician Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Players take the role of wizards who cast spells and summon creatures from decks of cards they have built, drawing on five colours of magic. It was first released at the Gen Con convention in 1993, and its first print run sold out within weeks. It created the genre of the collectible trading card game and influenced many later games. Wizards of the Coast was bought by Hasbro in 1999, and the game has an organised professional tournament circuit and millions of players worldwide.
