Creation of R

August 1993

R is a programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It was created at the University of Auckland by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, who built it as an implementation of ideas from the S language developed at Bell Labs. It was announced in the early 1990s and released as free software under the GNU General Public License in 1995. A group of developers called the R Core Team took over its development in 1997, and the Comprehensive R Archive Network distributes thousands of add-on packages. R became a standard tool for statisticians, data scientists and researchers in many fields.
