Founding of Schalke 04

4 May 1904

Schalke 04 is a German football club from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen, in the industrial Ruhr region. It was founded by a group of young men from mining families, and it became a symbol of the working-class culture of the Ruhr. In the 1930s and early 1940s it was Germany's strongest team, winning six national championships between 1934 and 1942, and it is remembered for its fast passing style, known as the Schalker Kreisel. It won the UEFA Cup in 1997, beating Inter Milan on penalties, and it has had a long rivalry with Borussia Dortmund known as the Revierderby. The club plays at the Veltins-Arena and is known by the nickname Die Knappen, the miners.
