George VI died on 6 February 1952 in Sandringham House, aged 56. King of the United Kingdom and the British dominions from 1936 until his death, George VI was born Prince Albert and was the second son of George V. A shy man who struggled with a stammer, he worked with the speech therapist Lionel Logue to improve his public speaking. He became king unexpectedly in December 1936, when his brother Edward VIII abdicated. During the Second World War he and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, stayed in London throughout the Blitz, earning the affection of the public. His reign saw the independence of India and Pakistan and the transformation of the empire into the Commonwealth. He died in his sleep in 1952 and was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II.
