Park Geun-hye was born on 2 February 1952 in Daegu. A South Korean politician, Park Geun-hye was the first woman to be elected president of the country, serving from 2013 to 2017. She is the daughter of Park Chung-hee, the military ruler who governed South Korea from 1961 to 1979, and served as First Lady after her mother's death. She entered politics in the 1990s and led the conservative party. Her presidency was undermined by the sinking of the ferry Sewol in 2014 and by a corruption scandal involving her confidante Choi Soon-sil, which led to mass protests, her impeachment and removal from office. She was sentenced to prison, and later pardoned in 2021.
