Founding of Court of Justice of the European Union

1952

The Court of Justice of the European Union is the judicial institution of the European Union, based in Luxembourg. Its oldest part, the Court of Justice, began in 1952 as the court of the European Coal and Steel Community and became the court of the European Communities in 1958. The judges, one from each member state, interpret EU law and ensure that it is applied in the same way in every country. In rulings such as Van Gend en Loos in 1963 and Costa v ENEL in 1964 the court established that European law takes precedence over national law and can be invoked by individuals. The institution now also includes the General Court, which hears many first-instance cases.
