Founding of European Medicines Agency

1995

The European Medicines Agency is the agency of the European Union responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines. It was set up in London as the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products and renamed in 2004. After Brexit it moved to Amsterdam in 2019. Pharmaceutical companies apply to it for centralized marketing authorization, valid in all member states: its committees assess the data, and the European Commission then issues the authorization on its recommendation. The agency works with the national medicines authorities in a network. During the COVID-19 pandemic it evaluated vaccines on an accelerated schedule, and in December 2020 it recommended the first one for authorization.
