Creation of Red Hat Linux

1995

Red Hat Linux was a Linux distribution created by Red Hat, a company founded by Bob Young and Marc Ewing. Its first public releases appeared in 1995, and it became one of the most popular distributions among both hobbyists and businesses. It introduced the RPM package format, which was adopted by many other distributions. Red Hat went public in 1999 in one of the most spectacular stock market debuts of the dot-com era. After version 9 in 2003, Red Hat stopped the consumer product and focused on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for business users, while a community-supported project called Fedora took over the experimental role. IBM acquired Red Hat in 2019 for about 34 billion dollars.
