Release of Apache HTTP Server

1995

The Apache HTTP Server is an open-source web server program that grew out of the NCSA HTTPd server, whose development had stalled in the mid-1990s. A group of webmasters collected patches to improve it and formed the Apache Group, and the name is often explained as a pun on a patchy server. Its modular design, free licence and reliability helped it overtake all rivals, and by the late 1990s it was the most widely used web server on the internet. The Apache Group later became the Apache Software Foundation, which oversees many other open-source projects. Although the Nginx server later took a large share of the market, Apache remains very widely deployed.
