Creation of Ruby

1995

Ruby is a general-purpose programming language created by the Japanese programmer Yukihiro Matsumoto, known as Matz, who began working on it in 1993 and made the first public release in 1995. He combined features he liked from languages such as Perl, Smalltalk and Lisp, and aimed to make programming pleasant for the programmer. In Ruby, everything is an object, and the syntax reads close to natural language. The language was little known outside Japan until the early 2000s, when an English-language documentation appeared. Its popularity increased greatly after 2004 with Ruby on Rails, a web framework created by David Heinemeier Hansson, and it was used by companies such as GitHub and Shopify.
