Founding of Deutsche Börse

1992

Deutsche Boerse was formed in Frankfurt in the early 1990s as a company that brought together the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, whose roots go back to the sixteenth century, and the other German exchanges and clearing services under a single operator. It was created to modernise German securities trading and to compete with the larger markets of London and New York. The group runs the Xetra electronic trading platform, the Eurex derivatives market and the Clearstream settlement business, and it compiles the DAX share index. It went public in 2001 and has attempted several large mergers, including a failed combination with the London Stock Exchange. Frankfurt remains continental Europe's leading financial centre alongside Paris.
